Event Description

Our 4 day Beginner Rhino for Jewellery Design Short Course is designed to provide new users of the software with all the tools and techniques they need to confidently experiment with modelling jewellery in Rhino3D for the purposes of 3D printing.

This particular course will run Mondays and Tuesdays for 2 weeks, or 27-28 Sept and 9-10 October.

Course Structure

Day 1

  • Introductions / Explanation of CAD and CAM
  • A basic walkthrough of the Rhino interface, including good practice
  • Organizing models with Layers
  • Precision modelling with Snaps and Osnaps
  • Building objects with curves, including
  • Explode, Join, Rebuild, Split, Trim, Fillet and Offset
  • Basic transformation commands, including
  • Move, Rotate, Scale, and Mirror


Day 2

  • Essential 3D Solid Modelling Strategy, including
    • Six methods for building solids based on curves.
    • Assembly of solids using Boolean commands
    • Basic Ring Construction, including design and tolerances
    • Band Rings
    • Solitaire Rings
    • Eternity Bands
    • Preparing a file for 3D Printing


Day 3

  • Building Stone Settings
    • Rubover Settings
    • Rex Setting
    • Prong Setting
    • Square Setting
    • Cabochon Settings
  • More Advanced Ring Construction, including
    • Building a pinched Tiffany-Style Shank
    • Building a Crossover Ring
  • Using Deformation Tools
  • Laying Objects Along a Curve


Day 4

  • Introduction to Surface Modelling, including closing open surfaces and combining open objects
  • Building a Bombe Ring
  • Basic techniques for hollowing out rings
  • Pave Setting Stones on a Surface
