Version 5.0 (5.1.2011.1207, 12/7/2011)
The arrow keys pan but do not rotate the view. Is this proper?

Permalink Reply by John Brock on December 16, 2011 at 8:48am I suspect you are in a parallel projection viewport (Tomp/Front/Right/etc.) in a 'plan' display pans when tapping the arrow keys. A perspective projection viewport will rotate.
I'm not sure why you would want to, but holding Ctrl+Shift and tapping the arrow keys in any view projection or alignment will rotate the display.

Permalink Reply by Dan Lewis on December 16, 2011 at 8:58am You're right, I was in a parallel projection viewport, however, V4 rotates the view with arrow keys in any view, why the change?
Thanks, Dan
Permalink Reply by John Brock on December 16, 2011 at 9:09am Because it's been an on-going tech support problem. Users manage to tap the keyboard arrow keys, the view gets rotated, then right-mouse click and drag rotates instead of pans, or a variety of other confusing things causes a increase in tech support. Most users have no idea the arrow keys can be used for view manipulation at all.
Our option and the discussion centered around removing the view changing ability entirely or adding another key combination to preserve the functionality but eliminate the bone-headed accidents. We chose the key modifier.

Permalink Reply by Dan Lewis on December 16, 2011 at 9:34am Could this be a user selected option amoung all of the other options?
Permalink Reply by John Brock on December 16, 2011 at 1:56pm Not likely. Since so few users are even aware of this view manipulation option, and even fewer use it, in an effort to minimize command and interface bloat, we decided to modify the behavior. Many people wanted to drop it altogether. This sort of hits a middle ground. The few users that do use it like yourself will have a small adjustment to make, but the trade-off is far fewer confused users that accidently tapped the keys and can't figure out why circles look slightly elliptical and the grid spacing doesn't seem to be even.

Dan
Use the arrow keys all the time...
Please allow this to be a user selected option.
A simple button to press under Rhino Options>Views would be perfect... please...

Permalink Reply by André bauer on August 29, 2012 at 5:48am Hi All,
also my opinion. Please make rotation from parallel views easier.
Can you create a short cut for the 3D Mouse, so one can put the option on a button of the mouse?
Why does the 2D Button on the Space Explorer not work?
There are many cases why new users can get confused, especially when coming from a 2D based Cad system like Autocad.
Most people dont know at all, that this also has 3 Dimensions.
But there is no chance to eliminate all these cases.
Maybe just make a clear important note after installation for some options, so everyone is informed.
I am used to work in one big window only, otherwise the screen (27") is to small in my opinion.
So I am rotating the model all the time.
I would really appreciate if the function could reactivated.
Best,
André Bauer
