Problem unrolling (or smashing) surface

In the attached file, unrolling the right-hand surface (top view) produces a mutant surface that looks like it might be folded in half (left-hand surface). 'Same thing when I use smash.

i have the problem i cant get Rhino to understand that for instance a u formed box i want to unroll in 5 sides with the obvious sides still attached to one another, it always breaks up al surfaces and its queit annoying that you have to manually put the shape together.

so what i want is a command thats says leave these connected or joined!!
