When using "Save As" or "Export Selected" command and want to save/export file with the same name but other extension, Rhino wants to overwrite existing file without changing extension (Even when I click to pick a file in order to use it's name, but changing a file extension from drop-down menu). Would be great to come back to usual way, as in Rhino 4. (Or switch option).
Thanks
Permalink Reply by Pascal Golay on October 21, 2012 at 11:28am Hi Yurii- what build of V5 do you have? This is fixed in tha last public beta (09/27/2012)- it works here:
Make a Box, Export, locate a file called MyFile.3dm, select it in the Save dialog anf change the file type to say, IGES. Here the file is correctly exported as MyFile.iges and does not overwrite MyFile.3dm. Is that what you meant?
thanks,

Permalink Reply by Yuri Tymochko on October 21, 2012 at 10:35pm Yes I am using latest Beta from (09/27/2012).
And it is working the way you say. If you use it that sequence.
But I often export for customers 3 different file types but with the same name and keep them in same folder.
And here is what happening:
1) Selecting objects which I want to export
2) Click "Export Selected..."
3) Export window appears where "File name" field is empty (but in version 4 it was the same already selected name of file which I am working on - this is very comfortable).
4) As I have already file with a name that I need in this folder, in order to avoid typing file name again (yes, I am kinda lazy, but file name sometimes is pretty tricky for customers models) I click once on existing file (for instance with *.3dm extension 5th version, which I am currently working on). Then in "File name" field appears name that I needed.
5) Choose from "File type" dropdown menu extension that I need (for instance *.dxf).
6) Rhino prompts to overwrite file with *.3dm extension. (this is what bothers me)
7) Then I say "no" and type file extension *.dxf manually.
It is the same way with all combinations of files.
Sorry for grammar mistakes if there are such.

I do not see that here in V4 or V5 on Export, only on SaveAs...?

Yep, fine so far
5) Choose from "File type" dropdown menu extension that I need (for instance *.dxf).
OK
6) Rhino prompts to overwrite file with *.3dm extension. (this is what bothers me)
Agreed, it is a bother, but it is not happening here... here is what I see: http://screencast.com/t/ZWUygBTfdSs4
That is what you expect to happen, correct?
So something is different... are you on Windows 7?

Permalink Reply by Yuri Tymochko on October 22, 2012 at 8:44am Wow, on your video everything works properly.
But not on my computer.
By the way, when I choose file type from dropdown menu, file name stays without file extension in "File name" field. Only name.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate edition 32 bit, with latest updates.
Can provide more information if needed.

Permalink Reply by Yuri Tymochko on October 24, 2012 at 11:34pm Ok, I tried to record my desktop but video quality looks like slide show.
So I made few screenshots. I upologise for running Windows in Ukrainian language. I will comment all steps.
1) Created a box
2) Run "Export Selected" command.
Choose already saved Box.3dm file to get it's name into File name field.
3) Choose DWG extension from "File type" dropdown menu
4) Click save, but notification window appears where it says:
"Box.3dm is existing already.
Overwrite it?"
Permalink Reply by Pascal Golay on October 25, 2012 at 8:32am Hi Yurii- thanks. OK, I can reproduce this if I turn on the setting in Windows to 'Hide extensions of known file types', as in your images. In Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder options... > View, look for this setting and Uncheck it. I'll see if we can make our system work with the extensions hidden.
Thanks for your patience and for pointing this out.

Permalink Reply by Yuri Tymochko on October 25, 2012 at 12:42pm Hi Pascal.
I unchecked it. What should I do now?
And thank you for your patience too :). I am pretty interested in making Rhino better. Besides this issue is about something I work with every day. So yes, I am interested in it :)
Permalink Reply by Pascal Golay on October 25, 2012 at 3:17pm Hi Yurii- if that setting in Windows is unchecked, then your Export behavior from Rhino should be more like you expect... is that working better?

Permalink Reply by Yuri Tymochko on October 25, 2012 at 10:19pm Wow, yes, that's work just fine, just like expected.
But I did not checked it at first place. So it was checked it but Rhino 4 was working properly all that time.
Permalink Reply by Pascal Golay on October 26, 2012 at 9:28am Hi Yurii- hiding the extensions is the default Windows setting- it's one of the first things I change when I get a new Windows installation. V4 used a different style of File Open/Save dialog from V5, so it did not care, and V5 should not care either - hopefully, we can fix it in a service release.
