UnRoll Surface Help

HiEach time I try to unroll this lofted surface the curves that are center on the lofted surface end up 3.41 mm off center on the unrolled surface.I hope someone with more surfacing experience can…Continue

Devolopable Surface Wrinkle

HiI am working on a small skiff that will be built from aluminum. The bottom surface was created with DevSrf in V4.The file was brought into V5 and Unroll Developable Surface was used but the…Continue

Devolope Surface Command
2 Replies

HiWe've been using the Develop Surface (DevSrf) command from Rhino labs for years. For the amount of twist we need Devsrf creates surfaces that are more accurate than Loft.I just tried the Devsrf…Continue

"Hi John- the problem with the off-center curve is that the surface has some double curvature and therefore the unroll has some error- I gather the problem is that there is no provision for distributing the error…"

"Hi Pascal Did you find a solution for the off center curve? The radii at the end of the lines seemed to be causing the 2nd problem. I exploded everything, removed the radius corners and joined everything back together then it worked. John"

"Hi John- for now, Explode (and Group, for convenience) the curve and unroll it as pieces- it seems to maintain its shape that way. -Pascal pascal@mcneel.com"

"Hi William To do this I will create a diagonal plane using Rectangular Plane 3 Point through the curved surface, then use  Object Intersect to create a curve on the surfaces.  Other times I will use Pull or Project Curve to Surface but I…"

"I think I see what's going on. The bottom is pretty flat so the rulings can go pretty much anywhere. With the flat area, the locations are probably being influenced by numerical noise in the calculations.  There may be a difference…"

"Hi Lowell This is the original set of 3D Curves in V5 for the skiff, before the sheer line was lifted 50mm.  The back (stern) of the surfaces would be trimmed off afterwards John"

"That doesn't sound good. Is it possible you can give me some curves so I can see what's going on in that case? It sounds likely that its because of some other difference that you get different answers, but the only way to know is to look…"

John Taylor replied to John Taylor's discussion Devolopable Surface Wrinkle
"Hi Lowell Turns out the customer wants higher sides on the skiff so the side surfaces have to be redone.  In V5 I tried to extending the chine and shear curves by 24, 36 & 48" none of which would allow a full length surface to be…"
