I work a lot with coated plywoods, that is plywoods with both sides covered with a coloured, phenolic resin.  Where the plywood is cut, the edge of the layered wood within shows and I would like to be able to render this effect in Rhino. 

When I explode my plywood polysurface I can easily apply the two renders that I want, but when I rejoin the surfaces, the last render chosen is applied to all surfaces.  Is there a way of retaining the different renders for the different surfaces within the polysurface?

Hi Nick- no, not in Rhino. If thew problem with having multiple objects is in how the render mesh resolves itself at the edges, you can try render the meshes directly and hide the surfaces/solids:

Join your object

Mesh it using the Mesh command, and hide the original.

Explode the mesh and the Join the bits that have the same material (meshes do not need to touch to be joined).

This way, the meshing correctly takes care of joined edges, so, no cracks in the rendering, but you can split it up for material assignment.




I'm having difficulty understanding your suggestion.  Can't I explode the polysurface and re-join the surfaces with the same material then group the whole and create the same effect without creating a mesh?  What does the mesh add?  If it's to retain the integrity of the polysurface that would be great because I often continue to work on parts long after their initial creation, except that if I continue to work with the polysurface, the mesh doesn't follow?

I attach an image of a simple join between four parts to illustrate what I'm doing. It's a structural part I use often and as such has been adapted many times for inclusion in different projects. I'd like to avoid having to spend time colouring the surfaces for rendering every time I integrate this part in a new design.
