"i drew a couple of lines then used them to trim the unwanted parts.. (you could probably also explode the border then delete the unwanted lines and re-join the remaining ) "

"Sorry Jeff - how are you deleting the unwanted parts?  When I try to do Extract Curve on the Nurbs border, Rhino goes into Copy mode instead of letting me "unparent" (don't know official term) the bits I want to delete. "

"the way i got the curve in my example was by running MeshToNurb on the mesh then DupBorder on the nurbs object (then trimming the unwanted parts) "
